Cyclist and Father Killed by Pothole.
A FATHER of three died when his bicycle hit a four-inch deep pothole that a council had been repeatedly warned about.
Software firm accountant Ralph Brazier, 52, was thrown on to the road while out riding with his cycling club.
The hole, 6in wide and 3ft long and next to a storm drain, had been sprayed red ahead of being repaired. It was fixed the following day.
Paramedics treated Mr Brazier, a superfit charity fundraiser, at the scene on Tuesday in Weybridge, Surrey, but he died in hospital after a cardiac arrest.
Last night wife Karen, 53, and their three teenage sons were being comforted at home in Thames Ditton.
Ten days earlier Ralph had been riding in Majorca with pals.
One, 46-year-old David Marsden, said: “He was strong, safe and competent. He was an inspiration to the younger guys.”
Another, Brett Scillitoe, added: “This could have been any one of us. I will not let this rest.”
Complaints about the pothole date back to 2009. It was last fixed little more than a year ago.
Harry Turner, 81, who lives opposite, said: “They did a temporary job — but, if you don’t do it properly, holes appear again.”
Surrey council said it was awaiting a report. It has paid £376,000 in compensation over 1,302 pothole incidents since 2013.
